Monsters or kids?Mid-May 2020To say that the last 2 months have been one of the worst would be a no-brainer at this point for anyone I asked. I wouldn't say I'm the one having the worst time either, but it hasn't been a pleasant journey. I feel like the confinement is driving me crazy; having to do my teaching job from my one-room apartment makes me feel claustrophobic. Maybe that's why I decided to look for a second job that would somehow force me out of that confined environment. I didn't want to quit my job considering I still had to pay the rent, so I looked for something at night; I finally got a job in a minimarket where I had to take care of the store during the wee hours.In the beginning, beyond how scary it is to be in a lonely place at night in a not very safe city, I must admit that it turned out to be something peaceful that helped lessen my anxiety. If in normal times few people have the need to buy supplies at 4 a.m., now that no one (supposedly) must leave their homes more than necessary, fewer people showed up at the store than usual. The job required little effort, minding the store and checking the cameras, nothing special, so it didn't wear me out for my day job either. So, I guess it's perfect, right? Well, it was, for about a week, after that I started to get bored.I guess after training for a job where I must watch out for distracted teenagers paying attention to a subject that doesn't interest them, it makes any job that demands less than that level of attention insufferably monotonous for me.In the end I had to turn to my students to figure out what to do about my situation, after all, everyone says young people are the future, and I see these kids seem to adapt faster to this crazy situation than I can (at least, it seems that way). It was strange for them that at the end of the lesson I asked them what they usually do to endure the confinement. Many didn't take me up on it, but some gave me ideas.Watching series (not much that catches my attention), playing video games (not my thing), uploading tiktoks (how does that work?), making virtual calls with friends (as if virtual classes were not enough)... But suddenly they suggested something that caught my attention, they talked about internet forums. The truth is I don't use networks much, but I guess harsh times call for harsh measures. So, I ended up creating an account on Reddit; at first it was kind of strange, but soon it became a new obsession for me. There were literally all kinds of forums where people were talking about different things and with how crazy this city is, a lot of New York related stuff was being written there. Something that turned my nights of watching from sad routines to fun reading moments.Sooner rather than later I found a forum where they were talking about monsters... Monsters of New York... And I ended up fascinated with its content. It was a group where they discussed strange sightings that occurred in the city, that had no clear explanation and that they (sometimes) associated with strange groups. Honestly, it's not that I entirely believed the things they said there, but it was fun to read. I liked the idea of monsters for its concept, but from my rational point of view there were no such things... With the amount of different people in this city I wouldn't be surprised if some people saw them as "monsters" from afar, after all today young people like to dress up (or I think they call it "cosplay").For a while, I was discussing in that forum; I commented on my skepticism towards such ideas (for those who believed them), and although sometimes there were things I could not explain, I was firm in my idea that there would always be a rational explanation for those encounters... I wish I had been a little more flexible with my vision at that time, because when I experienced my own unexplainable phenomenon, doubt consumed me... And later, fear too.My doubts began one day like any other on the night shift, it had been a particularly slow day, and I had had an exhausting day grading exam, so that night sleep overcame me for brief moments. But while I slept, I suddenly could hear strange noises coming from inside; my initial fear that someone had broken into the minimarket caused me to wake with a start, only to notice that I was still alone (at least around me). Even so, I still had a feeling that someone had broken into the store; so (with all the courage I could muster) I got up from my post and started to look up and down the aisles to see if there were any intruders. I had already checked the last aisle when I felt something small hit my head; I almost gasped in fright, that's when I realized it was going right over the vent pipe. "It can't be!" I thought to myself, I stepped back without taking my eyes off the vent.“W-who's-who's there?” I asked as loudly as my minute's fear would allow.Then I heard some voices coming from there, then a quick movement, someone was moving inside the tube! And before I could react to get the phone to call the police, the noise was gone. Whoever they were there were no longer. After the initial scare I tried to see what had happened, I noticed that what had fallen was... a "Cheetos"? I found it on the floor, near where I was standing (still scared). I tried to search the store looking for something else that would give away that what I saw (or rather heard) was real and not a hallucination due to my lack of sleep. Then I remembered the existence of the security camera and went to my post to see if I had captured something, that's when I realized I was not hallucinating. The camera was covered up with something, so I went to look at it and it had a piece of paper taped over it; no doubt someone had been there and they didn't want them to find out. Still, that didn't remove my doubts, a thief would have stolen my safe, but it was intact, not to say that the supplies seemed to be almost complete; if it was food that this thief took, it was only just enough... So why so determined not to be seen?... I noticed that the paper had a drawing of a monicker on it, it looked like a child's doodle, what does this mean?! Of course, I discussed my sighting on the forum, but I didn't have much proof (beyond the drawing). I was a victim of the skeptics of those to which I belonged, but I couldn't really blame them, there wasn't much in my story to consider it a monster sighting, I hadn't really seen anything. I tried to convince myself that it was probably just a very secretive thief.-o-o-o-June 2020Despite that, the next few days I couldn't help but turn the matter over several times in my head. I remembered some stories from the forum; some mentioned violent monsters, which you must run from, there was a lot of talk about a big black one with red eyes when it came to this kind of stories. On the other hand, others mentioned monsters that didn't seem to be violent (the kind that run away when they see you), and I remembered the story about the sighting of a huge rat in a busy street more than 10 years ago, which escaped as soon as it was discovered... I thought a bit about the matter, rats usually move between sewers, was I robbed by a huge rat?My side of reason was still trying to find the logic in the matter, accepting the idea of monsters living in the city would be too much for me, I had enough with normal crime to now worry about non-human creatures... For God's sake, this is not a jungle! But I can't help it, a part of me went the next few days to work much more alert than before... I can't help but think that, if the stories on that forum have any truth to them, what would happen if I ran into an aggressive monster... I was almost on the verge of quitting.However, I resisted doing it... Until that night, when I stopped seeing the world the same way...It started out the same as my last few nights had been; quite alert, I could have won a prize for how well I took care of the store. I was attentive to everything, barely glanced at the phone and was on the lookout for any customer, even if they were few. But, above all, I noticed anything that seemed unusual, I hardly took my eyes off the vent, and I was watching the camera, I wanted to know if something was going to happen. And it did... But it wasn't what I expected.I noticed some men running down the street; maybe it's because I was paranoid, but I noticed they were armed and heading towards the store. Before they saw me, I ducked around the back of the counter to lock myself in the storage area (of course, I forgot about the crime). I heard them come in, I was standing still, not wanting them to find out where I was, trembling inwardly, the fear that one false step would cause me to lose my life overcame me. That's when I felt a commotion in the store. I was still afraid to look out, but I put my ear to the door to hear the commotion.I heard more than two voices, comments like "What are those things?", "Wasn't this place alone?", "They've already discovered us" among other things that I didn't understand. Then, what came next were screams and blows, a fight had broken out outside and (I didn't know why) my curiosity won over my fear, so I opened the door slightly to see what had happened; I noticed the armed men ran out of the store... what had happened?“Guys, we must go... Or dad will be upset” I heard from inside the store, was anyone still here? “Okay, responsible kid... Let's go” I heard another voice, which had a tone of annoyance, then I saw that it was moving, THE VENT, THEY WERE MOVING THROUGH THE VENT!“Who is it?!” I exclaimed and started running to see.“Oh no...” a third voice, and I saw figures rushing through the vent.I started running faster, "No, I won't miss it this time!" I thought to myself.“But the Cheetos...” a fourth voice, how many are these guys?“Mikey forget that... We have-” and I saw them, then I froze.Not that my imagination hadn't come up with something that could be what I was going to see, but I certainly didn't expect... this. In front of me were two beings that... Well, they had a humanoid shape, but their skin was completely green (like the aliens in the movies), they also had bandages on their heads, one had a purple one and the other an orange and... The one in purple had headphones?... I was in shock, I didn't know what to think of what my eyes were seeing, besides they were seeing me too. I didn't know what should I do?, should I run or stay still? Will they attack me? Am I doomed to die tonight?“Eeeeh...” seemed to express the one with the orange bandage.“Hey, why don't you come upstairs?!” Another one! He peeked out from above the vent, he had a red bandage.How many... What the... Why are... What are they... Green as frogs... No... They have shells on their backs... They're turtles!... Bigger than any I've ever seen... And they walk like people... And they talk... What's that on the side of the orange one... ARE THOSE WEAPONS?Terror overcame me, I couldn't even scream, I only managed to make my body react to hide behind a nearby counter. My eyes are closed, and my head is going a thousand thoughts per second, I don't know what to do. Then I hear their voices again.“Oh no way, no way... Dad is going to be very upset” the voice sounded anxious, Dad? Do these creatures have a father?“That is if he finds out... We're not going to tell him anything, guys” the voice of the one who remembered he had the red bandage rang out.“What do we do with the woman?” was another of the voices. What? What are you going to do to me?!... Don't do anything to me, please!“Nothing” answered the anxious voice from before, What?“But she saw us” answered the other voice, what's going on?!“It doesn't matter... You saw how she reacted, we won't have any problems” said the voice of the one with the red band. Wait, are they worried because I... saw them?“But will she be all right?” another voice said, I think it was the one with the orange band. Is he worried about me?!“I think so, we scared those guys off... She should be fine” answered another voice. Why are you worried about me?Sure... Because I'm trembling behind a counter...“Come on guys let's go, otherwise dad will worry” said the voice that seemed to command the others and was heard moving through the vent. What are they? My fear is still latent, but I'm confused too.“You better not tell him about this, Leo” said the one with the red band. Leo? Does he have a name?“You do know he won't listen to you, right?” said the other voice.“Shut up, Donnie and go upstairs” he answered. Donnie? Do they all have names?“I hope the human is all right” I heard the one with the orange band say.Doubts and fear overcame me, but I peeked out to see the vent again. They seemed to be gone, but I caught a glimpse of the legs of one of the creatures before they left. This time, they didn't even bother to close the vent. I noticed my hands and realized they were shaking; I was still anxious about everything that had just happened; raiders got into the store (I thought I was going to die) and then I came face to face with something worthy of a New York monster forum story.Wait... Damn. I was so scared and confused that I didn't take any pictures. I just saw these creatures in front of me and had nothing to back it up.Still... I think I've had enough.As soon as I finished my shift that night, I explained to my boss that I was quitting my job. Truth be told, it was easy for him to understand why I wanted to quit after I told him about the muggers, although I completely left out the turtles (the last thing I wanted was to be called crazy). I received my settlement after a few days and decided to leave all that behind. At least I wanted to try as the whole experience continued to bother me for a long time.In the end, although at the beginning I didn't want to, I related my experience in the forum, hoping to get some calm by writing it, even if I didn't have any proof of it. The comments on the forum were diverse; some called me a liar, others believed me blindly, although the most interesting were those who had read me before, pointing out how curious it was that in my first posts on the forum I was so skeptical and now I was claiming to have seen something firsthand. I guess that's my biggest defense.Honestly, after all that interaction, and the days took away my initial fears, I reflected more deeply on my strange encounter. Somehow (even if it wasn't intentional) those talking turtles saved me from the muggers, and the more I thought about it and reflected on the way they acted, the more they reminded me (as crazy as it sounds) of some kids at school. The way they reacted, the way they ranted, even their tone... It's like they were... Teenagers.It all felt so weird to me now, but eventually I had to accept that what I saw was real, and that those creatures were out there somewhere. I ended up leaving the forum; I just felt like it was making me crazier. I already had my firsthand confirmation that what was shared there wasn't a lie, and I think that's enough for me. How am I supposed to get back to my normal life after that?The confinement ended after a few weeks, I had to go back to work, do my classes, pretend that nothing bad (other than the expected) had happened to me. The talks related to the whole confinement situation made it easy for me not to have to think about my strange encounter, although I never completely forgot about it. Because, while I now feel like those turtles aren't a threat, I worry about whether all those 'monsters' running around New York (that I haven't seen) will be just as harmless.-o-o-o-July 2023Time passed, a little more than three years, my life returned (in a sense) to the same routine it had before the pandemic. And this city was getting crazier by the day, these days there was talk of new crime organizations. There was even talk of a certain 'Superfly' as a major criminal, and even a risk of curfews in the future. No wonder the decision was made to cancel this year's homecoming dance (much to the general annoyance of the students), I am more scared than others would believe (it's not just criminals that scare me now).The days went by with some strange crimes, but the one that scared me the most was the one involving an ice cream truck blowing up. When I saw that news, part of my repressed fears kicked in, it must be those monsters. They are revealing themselves. I don't know why, but I think something horrible is going to happen soon.In the following days I noticed the students were quite enthusiastic about the school newspaper, and that's when I noticed something else strange; when I read it, I realized that it told how some mysterious vigilantes were defeating several criminal gangs. Although it wasn't this information that surprised me, it was that the article was written by April O'Niel (a student at the school). I don't know this girl that well, but I know for a fact that she has never lied (even the local news confirmed her information), I don't know how she could get what she was writing about. I understand that this girl is risky, it is something that all of us teachers at the school know, but still I am surprised by what she is doing, and a part of me also worries. She is just a kid, and she is getting into dangerous places.Doubt arose in my mind, where were these vigilantes from and how did O'Niel know them to the point of being the first to report their exploits?However, before I or anyone else could suspect more, all was revealed before the eyes of the whole city. And now I can really say that everything got a lot weirder.It was a terrifying night; from one moment to the next, my routine of watching television to pass the insomnia was interrupted by something straight out of a low-budget fiction movie from the 60s. A loud tremor warned me, and as I looked out the window I noticed with horror a huge beast (Godzilla?) spewing a green, glowing liquid from its mouth, talking and appearing to be a mixture of hundreds of animals in one. I screamed in horror at that, I wanted to run away from my apartment, away from the epicenter of whatever that thing was (it was still a few streets away from my home), but the elevator was not working... And trying to get down the stairs was chaos. Everyone was fleeing like a stampede, so, I ended up going back to my apartment after a traffic jam formed in the emergency stairwell.I didn't know what to do, I was literally trapped in this tiny apartment as chaos worthy of a monster movie unfolded on the other side of my window. I sat on the floor, hugged my knees and closed my eyes tightly, praying that this was all just a bad dream.My TV was still on, I didn't even have the courage to get up and turn it off, if that beast was looking through my window, I didn't want to find out what it would do to me, I tried to stay hidden. Then, the newscast I was watching started to tell the events that were happening now; monsters were invading the streets besides that huge beast (what was I missing) led by some... Turtles? I opened my eyes when I heard that, and my old strange encounter came back to my memory; as I watched the newsreel footage, I realized that these were the same turtles I saw a few years ago.So... Are they the bad guys? I didn't understand then what was so special about me that they didn't do anything to me that night? But before I could even question it, something else unthinkable happened...“Wait... Keep rolling... I bring the true story” that voice.“O'Niel?!” I exclaimed when I saw that the girl was there on TV, just when the presenter had run away, what was she doing there?She seemed very nervous, she even threw up a little (poor girl), but she said something that surprised me. Both the turtles and the other mutant animals that were running through the streets were fighting the huge beast. O'Niel started telling details about the turtles that only she seemed to know, the turtles were the mysterious vigilantes that had been fighting the criminals the last few days... I wasn't expecting that.Then I heard the loud voice of one of the few neighbors still on the floor, from outside my apartment.“Hey, we must help the turtles!” he exclaimed loudly, I could see him determined as I peeked through the door “That monster is coming through here! We must throw things at it!”At that, I finally peeked out the window to realize that it was true. The monster was almost at the front of the building, and he had the poor turtles clutched in a huge pincer he had for a hand. We all stood at our windows, ready to throw things at the beast.Out of desperation, I remember screaming like I hadn't done in years, “Where did I get the courage to do what I'm doing?” I threw all those things I hated towards that monster (mostly appliances that were already broken). The next thing happened fast (I barely had time to process it): the turtles broke free from its grip thanks to the effort we all made (including the other mutant animals), and managed to defeat the monster, jumping from one side to the other while hitting it. No idea how, but after a strong celestial explosion (from which I took cover), the beast was no more, it seemed to have exploded. As if its amalgam made of hundreds of animals, suddenly made up its mind and became all separate entities again.When I looked out the window again, the turtles and the other mutant animals were downstairs being surrounded by people. Everyone started clapping and cheering. Now I could safely say, those turtles saved me... No, they saved the whole city.It was a real crazy story what happened that night, and I wouldn't soon forget it because the city was pretty much destroyed, but now we all knew that those mutants existed and that they were good people (Or animals? I don't know exactly how they are identified). I was further surprised to learn that those turtles were just teenagers, "So I wasn't wrong in my suspicions" I thought to myself.And I was certainly more surprised when I learned that those same turtles had enrolled in the school where I work. It really is a small world.-o-o-o-August 2023At first, I had doubts about how these mutants, who had spent their entire lives isolated from society would adapt to the school environment. But oddly enough these kids, beyond their appearance, turned out to be not much different from other ordinary teenagers. They adapted quite quickly (even more than other human kids) and managed to make friends, which I'm glad they really deserved it. At the end of the day, they were just kids wanting to live the same experiences as the others.Despite being siblings and being the same age, their personalities were certainly different (nothing like average turtles, that's for sure), I could tell that whenever I had to teach them.Michelangelo was quite scattered, he seemed to have trouble paying attention to one thing at a time. Besides being quite talkative, he didn't seem to be able to stay quiet for long, he didn't generate conflict among his classmates, but he did distract them from learning. No wonder he got into the school's drama workshop, no doubt there his sociable impulses and restless nature will be put to good use. Although his grades in my subject have not been very good, with a little help, I think he will be able to improve them.Donatello seemed to be his opposite, he was quite quiet and didn't talk much in class, although he didn't always pay attention. He was quite intelligent, though, and could quickly grasp all the logic behind the problems. Let's just say he earned the chance to keep his headphones in my class. By regulation it is forbidden to have electrical devices during class, but I used to have a condition for my students, if they showed they knew what I was talking about they could keep their devices. Donatello not only demonstrated that he knew what I was talking about, he even corrected me. He seems to be quite gifted.Raphael, his other brother, however, was not the case. Unlike Michelangelo, it wasn't that he was distracted or anything, you could really tell he wanted to learn, but he had a hard time understanding things. Worse than that, he got frustrated quickly and got angry easily when he made a mistake. At one point or another I had to intervene so that he and the other students didn't end up fighting. I guess he will need a little more help. The good thing is that the wrestling workshop has been calming his violent impulses a bit, as well as making friends with similar interests there.Leonardo certainly acted as if he was the oldest of them, I know that technically they are all like quadruplets, but there is always a brother who takes the role of the responsible one even in these cases, and without a doubt here it was Leonardo. He was quite orderly in everything, disciplined and always listened attentively to every single instruction and rule, he was basically that model student that teachers usually want in their classroom. He didn't seem to be the smartest of his siblings, but he was certainly the most studious of them. Mind you, he was quite anxious, which probably explained why (unlike his siblings) he only had April as a friend and didn't seem to have ventured out to meet more people.One day, with the excuse of Raphael and Michelangelo's grade problems, I decided to call the four of them to talk to me at the end of class.“Well... With that we are done for the day...” I said as I finished writing the last thing on the blackboard “The turtle brothers, I want you to stay... I want to talk to you” immediately there were murmurs in the room.I laughed internally, teenagers always think that when a teacher calls them it is to scold them, and these kids were no exception. As the other kids were leaving the room, they were muttering nervously amongst themselves, probably trying to figure out what they had done wrong for me to call them in.Once everyone left, the four of them approached my desk.“Well guys... I wanted to talk to you because-” however, Leonardo interrupted me.“Forgive us teacher, it was not our intention not to bring the homework, it's just that our tenant ate it” he said quickly.“Leo!” exclaimed the other three.“That was Mikey's fault for leaving it on the table where we eat” said Raphael.“I didn't know that was going to happen” complained Michelangelo “Besides, you are gossips” he started to argue.I just laughed a little, to their surprise.“Haha sorry...” I quickly apologized taking my 'teacher tone' again “Calm down, kids, I wasn't calling you for that. You're not in trouble” they all seemed to relax after that “I wanted to thank you for saving my life three years ago” they all looked at me confused.“I don't remember seeing you before class teacher” Leonardo answered honestly.I managed to notice a bit of nervousness on the boys' faces. Of course, mentioning that they saw me years ago would imply that I saw them when they were in hiding.“I guess you don't remember... But three years ago, I was working overnight at a convenience store, when some muggers broke into the store... And you guys showed up” that seemed to make them remember.“Wait... You were the woman who was shaking when we left?” Raphael exclaimed pointing at me, immediately getting a little push from Leonardo.“Raph! Don't be disrespectful!” he scolded him.“Calm down” I told them before an argument started again “It's true that I was scared when I saw you, and now I regret it... But in the end, you saved my life that night, and I'm very grateful for that” the boys seemed embarrassed, but they looked happy.“Heh, it was nothing teacher” said with some joy and embarrassment Michelangelo.“So... You just called to thank us?” Donatello asked in surprise.“Partly, but it's also because I want to return the favor?” I said as I lifted a box I had stored and placed it on the table, immediately the boys looked at it with some curiosity.“What's in there?” asked Michelangelo.“A gift for you... Sure, if you want it” I said, noticing how Leonardo took a step forward and opened the box, the inside was full of books.“Books?” Raphael asked, losing his initial enthusiasm.“I understand that you live in the sewers... And that you haven't had formal classes since your childhood, this might help you catch up on subject matter you never saw...” I noticed their doubtful looks, I can't deny that this is not exactly a gift that today's teenagers like “Of course nowadays you young people have the internet and stuff, but these books have accurate information, even if it's a bit old-fashioned for you... Sure, if you don't want them no problem-” I was about to take the box when I was interrupted by Donatello.“No, no teacher, this is great” he said with a certain childish excitement in his voice.“Yes... Wow, I've never seen such clean books in my life” commented Leonardo, sounding a little less formal than before, I smiled noticing his enthusiasm.“Haha, I'm glad you like it, I'll pass you my number too...” I wrote it on a piece of paper and handed it to Raphael “I know you find the subject a little difficult, if you need some advice, you can write me” I said cheerfully.“Thank you” Raphael said dryly, I could notice a slight blush, it seems he was a little embarrassed and was trying to hide it, I sighed internally amused, teenagers and their dramas.“Well, that was it guys, I hope you have a good weekend... You can go now” with that I said goodbye to them as they walked out the door.I heard some teasing from them towards Raphael for his shy expression earlier, as I smiled to myself, glad to know I was able to return the favor to those kids. Then Michelangelo opened the door again.“Hey, teacher?...” he said to get my attention, I looked at him “Thank you very much, you are very kind” he said before leaving, giving me a charming smile.This time it was my turn to blush, "How sweet" I thought. If you had told me years ago that I would end up teaching some turtle brothers (and that I would like them), I wouldn't have believed it.No doubt this world is very crazy and strange.THE END

I must profusely apologize for the inactivity and lack of attention here. Things have been a bit busy and chaotic recently.

Anyhow, moving on. Many of you are aware that Stan Sakai's lovely wife is battling an illness and has been moved into 24 hour care and Stan Sakai's insurance can't cover it. So in order to pull together the necessary funds they have organized an auction, asking for other artists to contribute original works to be auctioned for money. The link to the information can be found here: www.bleedingcool.com/2013/11/2…

Maybe you're a writer or just not an artist? Well you can still help out by paying to the pay pal they have set up: garageartstudio.blogspot.com/2…

This is so very late but please help any way possible! Thank you lovelies!

Hey there!
I didn't realize you had a couples folder included.
You think you can try moving this piece into that folder? helloharmonyxx.deviantart.com/…

I'm so sorry about that ^^; ^^;
